<br /></div>
Is it just me, or are rainy days sometimes guilty pleasures? Being a great excuse to curl up with a great book, cup of chamomile tea, and a pair of soft cozy slippers mom just knit! I'm hoping one day to work up to knitting some hats, and perhaps one of those sweet simple sweaters that look just too adorable on the little ones. But oh, how intimidating those patterns seem. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Believe it or not, the bottom of this slipper is a shammy! I found it cost much less than craft store leather and was simple to work with. I used a paper punch to make holes around the edge and then used a yarn needle to attach the soles onto the slippers. Now our slippers aren't so<i> slippy</i> as G says and much more cozy! </div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">The sky is dull and grey, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">piercing the chill its blast,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">each day grows gently darker, winter's come at last. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Mamma knits by the fire, her little ones round her knees.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"It's dark before we tired, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">tell us something if you please?"</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">I see that you are not too fond of winter's chill, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">but if you'll listen and be still</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> I'll tell you about someone you haven't seen...</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> Someone very nice, a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> King who lives in a palace of ice. "</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"We'll not be noisy at all, but as good as ever we can."</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"Then," said mama smiling, "I will tell you about King Winterland and Jack Frost his man."</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Some children don't like the dark, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">the forest bare with naught but bark</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Some miss the summer's heat, a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">utumns glow, and the spring's bower of flowery treats</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">The children shook their heads in agreement, "we could do well with out all this cold treatment"</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">But the wisest children see...</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">that each season has gifts to be received,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">One of them is a man very nice, his heart made of the purest ice.</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">And although some may think him cold, he gives mighty gifts greater than gold.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">King Winter dwells in the North, far away in the frozen zone,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">in a palace of snow he holds his court, upon an icy throne. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">He has cushions of course: his queen made them out of her wedding gown,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">stuffing them well with snowflakes fine, they are soft as a goose's down. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">The King has a trusty servant, Jack Frost is his name, </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">his nose is raspberry red, his beard is as white and stiff as a cane. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Jack is a good fellow of joy, and serves their Majesties well. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">He's here and he's there, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">and he's everywhere, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">and does more than I can tell.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">but you might have seen him, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">he loves to make children art</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">On windows he paints flowers for you with shimmery frost.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Each year, about this time, the King and his royal train</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">set off through the world, sweeping over mountain and plain. </span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">His Majesty fails not to visit every land that's not too hot,</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">to give chill both high and low, from the palace down to the smallest lot.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">So that the Earth may stay warm and have water for the spring</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">The king knits of blanket of snow, the finest I've ever seen </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Fine mirrors for children to skate on; none are finer than Jack can make;</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">in scratchless sheets of crystal clear, he lays them on river and lake. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">The trees, all naked and drear, he robes in the purest white, </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">with icicles shining of rainbow hues, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">making their branches bright. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"I have, I have seen him, he vistited just last night! "</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"Quiet now", said susy to her brother, "this story is such a delight!"</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">These wonders wrought in a single night may well excite surprise,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">amazed is the sun when he gets up at dawn, and stares as he rises.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Then out come all the waking boys and girls, all of winter's gifts to view,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">and their noses and cheeks turn red with cold, some of them even turn blue. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Outside they pelt each other with snow, rolling it up in a mighty ball,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">nd shout and laugh and scamper about, and heels over head they fall. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Next they make a man of snow, is grand as a soldier tall.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">A wooden broom in his hand, a carrot for his nose. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">He is the finest of friends any child should know. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> King Winter laughs at the fun being had in his kingdom of snow</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> A happy tear streaks down his cheek as he cries, "Bravo!" </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">The children of this village delight in the fun and good of this season </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">I'll give to them more gifts for this happy reason.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"What my king,"asks Jake "</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">shall you bring, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">when you have given so many wonderful things?"</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">The King smiled, showing his teeth of ice, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">Oh gifts so very nice!"</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">I will make the child's breath be seen in my winters air</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">They can puff and huff like dragons, magic now theirs!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">a crispy crunch </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">of shimmer dust </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">shall drape the forest ground, </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">So that they shall never be lost, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">but always found. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">My icicle tears shall drape the roofs of all their dwellings</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">so that they may know, whilst icicles may melt, my heart is ever swelling.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"Mama, mama, King Winter is so kind when will he pass our way?"</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"He will stay with us past Christmas Day but usually leaves before May."</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">"Oh we love, we love this wintertime," they said</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> Mama smiled and patted their heads...</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> "Now dream of all the wintery gifts of glittering snow </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;">and</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: garamond;"> all the love of Winter's time you're soon to know."</span></div>

There is something magical about picking up an object that has been whittled from a tree that once grew in the forest and lovingly shaped, by a toy maker in Germany, into a figure that fits softly in hand. Ostheimer figures warm to the touch and stare back in sweetly painted eyes and dreamy watercolor decoration. As a child, I cherished these wooden figures and it gave me great joy to pass them down to watch my children play with them happily as I once did. I'm still amazed at the quality these figures have, they only get better in time and become something between a very cherished collectible and friend. I thought I'd share our newest forest friends from Bella Luna Toys, our favorite place to purchase them, in case you were wondering where to find them. You can also make special orders if you don't see the one you're wanting on their site, which is something we really appreciate. Here's to sweet wooden toys!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whether or not you believe in faeries, there is something magical about creating an enchanted neighborhood for 'wee one's' play. We made an autumn house for faeries under a Chinese Maple tree. It's umbrella of branches will soon turn into cascades of brilliant red leaves; making for a magical hidden bower just perfect for play. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1hcEPXBSJxk/TneUO6hwHnI/AAAAAAAAEws/Vg7vHvdcaPY/s1600/IMG_5062.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1hcEPXBSJxk/TneUO6hwHnI/AAAAAAAAEws/Vg7vHvdcaPY/s640/IMG_5062.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Faerie houses don't have to be any certain place but they should be somewhere special where nature's magic thrives. Autumn acres can be made with seasonal flowers such as: Autumn's Joy, Mistletoe, Goldenrod, Autumn Crocus, or Hardy Mum. Fragrant herbs such as Rosemary and Thyme also add to seasonal joy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Your creativity is what makes it special, so let your imagination guide you when constructing your magical house! Natural found objects such as twigs, rocks, or bark are best for construction. Houses can be as simple as stacking twigs together, like a teepee, or houses can be a more permanent structure, such as our's above, made by glueing scraps of lumber together. To help attract the faeries, adorn your house with sparkling objects like glass stones, sea glass, glitter, or pretty ribbons. Tiny offerings of bread, milk, honey, or butter are also appreciated by faeries. My children enjoy the tradition of bringing small crumbs to the faeries each morning after their breakfast. They also enjoy playing with wee folk dolls, our favorite are from Wildflower toys on Etsy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UvQudWOmrzk/TneUXgn3XyI/AAAAAAAAEw0/Li9ZLpCqACY/s1600/IMG_5067.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UvQudWOmrzk/TneUXgn3XyI/AAAAAAAAEw0/Li9ZLpCqACY/s640/IMG_5067.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

You can make furniture from natural objects as well. We made a special table out of a tree slice and stump. We set the table with sea shell bowls and made a center piece from tiny flowers. </div>

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago grew the first apple tree. It was just a baby with no branches to speak of. It grew bigger every day as it watched the clouds drift in the sky, the sun warm the fields, and the birds sing. During the quiet nights the tree took friendship in the glimmering stars. It stretched it's branches to the sky hoping that someday it might be tall enough to reach one. After many years the tree lost hope and began to cry. An orchard faerie heard the great tree crying and flew down to ask what was wrong. The great tree cried, "I wish to touch the stars but they are out of my reach."<br />
The faerie said," Stars live far away. You have roots and must grow where you are planted."<br />
The tree was terribly sad at the news.<br />
"Do not distress," said the faerie, "I will get a star for you but my journey will take long and you must promise to grow big and strong while I'm away."<br />
The tree's happiness returned and as it promised, it grew. That spring the tree had beautiful pink flowers and then in the summer apples began to grow from it's branches. With the fall, the tiny apples grew bigger and bigger and bigger each one a lovelier red than the next! The great apple tree was so fond of it's apples that it forgot all about the stars, until the day when the faerie returned.<br />
"I brought you a basket of stars," said the faerie.<br />
"Oh, thank you," exclaimed the apple tree,"but my branches are full of apples and I'm afraid I can't hold the stars without dropping them."<br />
The faerie thought for a moment and said,"Your apples will soon drop to nourish children. I will hide your stars deep inside each of your apples so that you will always have stars and be able to share them with the world." And with that the faerie touched her wand to each apple and to this day, whenever you cut open an apple, you will find a star buried deep within waiting for you to discover it.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of a book club reading <u>Work and Play in Early Childhood</u> by Freya Jaffke. I loved hearing what other parents took from the book and how it applied to their home. It amazed me just how differently each chapter spoke to each parent. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Many parents confessed that the most difficult topic was demonstrating joy in everyday work. Hearing their struggles, helped me to see that many parents were struggling with this topic and it made me reflect more deeply about the importance of creating tranquility and setting a good example by being present and joyful in our daily work. One parent confessed that when she did the dishes it was out of necessity, and that she couldn't see enjoying it in any way. Some suggestions were to trade the task with another family member. Another was to try to find joy in the process; the warm water, the scent of the dish soap, the fun in making suds, and the joy in having clean dishes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are some suggestions for joyful work from my reading:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Define intention and create a clear work process with a logical order. </li>
<li>Have the correct tools assembled before work begins. </li>
<li>Be present. Focus on the task and see it through. </li>
<li>Don't rush, enjoy the process, even in the most mundane task there can be some joy found.</li>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</ol>
<span style="text-align: center;">For more information about creating tranquility, </span><u style="text-align: center;">Sanctuaries of Childhood</u><span style="text-align: center;">, is another wonderful book to read.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This easy to remove kid-friendly tree takes only pennies to make.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What's needed:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Washi tape</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Clear command hooks</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Scrapbook paper</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Twinkle lights</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cut out ornaments and a star from scrapbook paper. We traced around a hot cocoa mug on the back of our scrapbook paper to create an ornament template. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">2.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Attach washi tape on the wall in a triangle shape for the tree and a rectangle for the base.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">3.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using a zig zag pattern we placed 6 command hooks on the wall to affix the lights. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(Have no fear the command hooks easily remove and won't damage your walls.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">4.</span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Allow the kids to 'decorate' the tree with your paper ornaments. Kids may also enjoy decorating individual ornaments with crayons or puffy paint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Such a beautiful and eco-friendly way to celebrate the season. We just had to share!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We are very excited to be back and are pleased to offer our FREE Paper Pockets Gnome Exchange Game; a fun and playful way to teach children about coinage. For younger children it can be used as an introduction to counting or simply playing pretend.<br />
<br />

Here's how it works...<br />
<br />
The Gnome bankers need help filling the tills at Toadstool bank. Match the coins to the correct spots while learning the value of each coin.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Learn even more by helping Mr. Gnome exchange coins. Place a hand full of coins onto the pocket. Then help Mr. Gnome reduce the coins in his pocket by exchanging small value coins for larger value ones. The goal is to have the same amount of money with least amount of coins. Print two and have a race with a friend to see who can lighten the pockets faster!<br />

We are excited to offer our first free printable inspired by the beloved children's story <i>The Very Hungry Caterpillar </i>by Eric Carle! <u>Very Hungry Caterpillars</u> is a matching game that demonstrates numeric value in a fun and interactive way. To play, cut out the caterpillars and the leaves, then use a single hole punch to make the holes where the hungry caterpillar has taken a bite of the leaf! Match each caterpillar to its leaf. The more the caterpillar eats, the longer and bigger he gets! </div>

Let your child's inner artist shine with our DIY Window Cling Art. You can make window clings in any shape or color you like with our simple recipe! These window clings are mess free and can be used over and over again for pure, vibrant, colorful fun!<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">MATERIALS</span><br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Modge Podge</li>

<li>Cookie Sheet</li>
<li>Food Coloring</li>
<li>Scissors</li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1</span><br />
Water down Modge Podge until it is the consistency of cream, mix in food color of your choice. We used 10 drops, color will dry transparent. Mix gently and stir as little as possible, so as not to get air bubbles into the mixture. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SLqTcP9OnEc/VW9i2jkVjqI/AAAAAAAAXxI/0MiypotEAFM/s1600/IMG_7125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SLqTcP9OnEc/VW9i2jkVjqI/AAAAAAAAXxI/0MiypotEAFM/s400/IMG_7125.JPG" width="331" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
Pour onto a cookie sheet in single colors or marbled together as shown above. Set oven to the lowest setting and bake for an hour. Allow to cool.<br />
<br />

A bounded three-dimensional figure that has length, width, and depth.<br />
If you think about how many shapes are found in our world you can begin to understand the variety of geometric solids. The ten most common are (<i>as seen from left to right)</i> cylinder, sphere, rectangular prism, cube, triangular prism, three-sided and four-sided pyramid, ovoid, ellipsoid, and cone.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Why Learn About Geometric Solids?</span> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Geometric solids develop a <b>stereognostic sense</b><i> </i><i>(recognition of objects by touch</i>). By identifying basic shapes found in the child's cultural environment, the child is able to explore their world and experience mathematics through touch. In doing so the child develops a memory of the solid shapes that they can later refer to when working in abstract concepts of later geometry work. Plus understanding of these simple shapes aids in art, writing, and so much more! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">To Make Your Own Geometric Solids.</span><br />
Use our clay dough recipe to mold similar shapes as above. Once the shapes are molded, bake on low or allow to air dry until firm. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Games to Play</span></div>
Play a Matching Game<br />
Use our nomenclature cards as a matching activity. Or make your own! One set of cards depicts the name of each geometric solid, while the second set has correspondingly shaped every day objects. <br />
<br />
Play a Guessing Game.<br />
Take turns. One person closes their eyes while the other hands them a shape to guess. See how many you can guess right!<br />

Drawing with crayons is best done on a medium weight paper (found in most local craft stores) but standard copy paper works as well. Having a smooth pad or a few extra pieces of paper underneath your drawing will prevent the work surface from rubbing through to the picture on top. </div>

Characters are easy to draw if you know the proportions. The adult form can be divided into five equal sections. For a child, there are only three sections. And, a baby can be simply drawn, making a small oval for the head and slightly elongated oval for the swaddling. Above, we've drawn some common action poses that should help you tell almost any story! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We just finished reading this charming children's book and just had to write about it.<i> Hasty Pudding, Johnnycakes, and Other Good Stuff Cooking In Colonial America by Loretta Frances Ichord</i>. This beautifully illustrated cookbook includes foods that the early colonists would have prepared. It is also great introduction into early american history; with little tidbits here and there of every day life, tools, and habits of early American settlers, enslaved African Americans, and the indigenous Native Americans. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The book talks about the Native American's way of making Forest Taffy, to carry with them along hunting trips for needed energy and to satisfy their sweet tooth! <i>Forest Taffy was made by slow boiling maple syrup then cooling it in a fine layer in the snow. </i>How fun, I can't wait to try this one! </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This time of year is known by many names; Candlemas, Ground Hog day, and Imbolc to name a few. By whatever name it is called, this time of year marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It is a time of awakening. The quickening of the earth speaks of the promises of new beginnings, of birth, and of growth. In Waldorf Schools the festival of Candlemas is celebrated. Generally children will make candle or lantern crafts on this day. The children may recite a special verse or two. The nature table may now be turned to spring, and slowly new spring time verses will make their way into the school day. At home, to honor the beginnings of spring we celebrate Imbolc, one of the first European celebrations of this time of year , which translates as "in the belly", referring to the time of year when spring lambs were soon to be born, and milk once again returned to the land. This was an important time of year for families who depended upon the land. Here are a few of our traditions to honor this time of year!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wzu2jsdIpVg/TyhbMxKaLbI/AAAAAAAAHoE/RuQg-PZez34/s1600/IMG_6866.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wzu2jsdIpVg/TyhbMxKaLbI/AAAAAAAAHoE/RuQg-PZez34/s640/IMG_6866.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
~This year I made an herb wreath (a symbol of eternity) to bless our hearth and home. I used some wire to make the wreath and to secure the bay leaves. Herbs and flowers associated with this time of year are: angelica, basil, bay, blackberry, celandine, heather, iris, myrrh, violets, and all white or yellow flowers.<br />
Here is a Brighid verse or if you wish Mother Earth or Sister Spring could be substituted :<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>May Brigid bless the house wherein you dwell.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Bless every fireside, every wall and door</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Bless every heart that beats beneath its roof</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Bless every hand that toils to bring it joy.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Bless every foot that walks its portals through.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>May Brighid bless this house that shelters you. </i></div>
<br />
<br />
~Folk lore is that by leaving cloth on the mantle or window sill overnight, it will be blessed by Brighid with all the healing and abundant energy of spring. This year we are leaving our <a href="http://moonbeamandapplesauce.blogspot.com/2011/02/silk-rainbow-blanket-tutorial.html" target="_blank">rainbow baby blankets</a> on the window sill for blessings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gTavXWACdUY/TyiURTIPNgI/AAAAAAAAHo4/MaRDN4ds_ZU/s1600/IMG_2891.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="334" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gTavXWACdUY/TyiURTIPNgI/AAAAAAAAHo4/MaRDN4ds_ZU/s400/IMG_2891.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
~ Make a lantern. Here are two of my most popular tutorials for a <a href="http://moonbeamandapplesauce.blogspot.com/2011/04/i-fell-in-love-with-star-lanterns.html" target="_blank">star lantern</a> and a <a href="http://moonbeamandapplesauce.blogspot.com/2011/04/dodecahedron-star-lantern-tutorial.html" target="_blank">dodechadron lantern</a>.<br />
<br />
~Every year we go for a family spring walk in search of signs of early spring, and every year there is a new wonder to be seen! Some believe that weather this day can predict winter's decline or prolonged stay. Here is a weather verse:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>If candlemas day be fair and bright</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>winter will have another fight</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>If candlemas day brings cloud and rain, </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>winter won't come again</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>If candlemas day be dry and fair</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>the half of the winter's to come and mair</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>If candlemas day be wet and foul</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>the half o the winter's gane at yule. </i></div>
<br />
~White flowers symbolize purity and the promise of blooming to come. Nothing brightens winter like early spring flowers. <a href="http://moonbeamandapplesauce.blogspot.com/2012/01/watercolor-flowers.html" target="_blank">Paper ones</a> look nice too!<br />
<br />
~To welcome in the light, we turn on every light in the house, open every window and place a candle in each. The fresh, cool air is always nice!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I5OZSCUtnSw/TyhbOF9BeJI/AAAAAAAAHoM/OjuCHUqpN6s/s1600/IMG_6869.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I5OZSCUtnSw/TyhbOF9BeJI/AAAAAAAAHoM/OjuCHUqpN6s/s400/IMG_6869.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
~This time of year we leave outdoor offerings of food to the birds and other small animals who might be having a difficult time finding sustenance during these barren months, we also leave small bits of yarn and cloth for the birdies to make their nests. In the spring, it's fun to see little bits of our gifts, that are now treasured in the birdie homes around us. (above is a little paper bird garland, J wanted to make in homage to her birdie friends.)<br />
<br />
~I give the girls seeds to bless with love and growth, then we plant them in an indoor herb garden. This year we are forcing tulip bulbs.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7T0m2lkdnkQ/TyiRBFOXW3I/AAAAAAAAHos/oggpRrTxSrQ/s1600/IMG_6877.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7T0m2lkdnkQ/TyiRBFOXW3I/AAAAAAAAHos/oggpRrTxSrQ/s400/IMG_6877.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
~ We aren't making any of these because we have plenty, but in years past we made <a href="http://moonbeamandapplesauce.blogspot.com/2011/03/beeswax-candles-tutorial.html" target="_blank">beeswax candles</a> or decorated candles with paint, marker, beeswax and whatever struck as inspiration. The batch we made has lasted us several years and was a fun family project.<br />
<br />
~Dairy and spicey foods are traditional for feasts this time of year. We don't do too much dairy because G has some trouble with it, but I do make an almond milk cake for dessert and spicy coconut shrimp for dinner. Here is an end of winter meal verse:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The winter is coming to an end</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>the stores of food well spent</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Though winter's blanket is all surround</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>our friends and warmth are felt all around</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The promise of spring we can see</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>So grateful are we for food, home and family.</i></div>
<br />
~As this time of year is seen as a time of purification and growth. I like to reflect on my thoughts and goals for the year to come.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niT9H7KIDnc/TyhbQTuKaRI/AAAAAAAAHoU/vhbD4nqGB-M/s1600/IMG_6873.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niT9H7KIDnc/TyhbQTuKaRI/AAAAAAAAHoU/vhbD4nqGB-M/s400/IMG_6873.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
~Make room for the good things to come in your home by giving blessings to others. Do some spring cleaning, and donate unused items to those in need. This is a great opportunity to teach children about charity.<br />
<br />
~Willow is a tree often associated with this time of year. We couldn't find any that had fallen, but made these pussy willow branches by wet felting bits of wool, then hot gluing them to sticks we found on our nature walks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

~ Brighid is said to walk the earth on Imbolc Eve. Traditionally in both catholic and pagan celebrations, wheat dolls were made to represent Brighid. A bed of straw was made for her to rest on, adorned with baubles of ribbons and shells. All the young women of the village would gather collectively for a nightcap to welcome Brighid. I let the girls make up their bed and dolls Brighid style, decorating them with symbols of spring and ribbons. Then on Imbolc eve, we have a fun camp out on the floor, tent sheets and all.<br />

Even Carson would approve of our elegant placemat that teaches proper Downtown table manners! Whether you are dining at the Abbey or in your dining room, your child can learn proper place setting simply by placing their dining ware over our mat!<br>
<br>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">MATERIALS</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Cotton fabric in your choice of pattern 1/2 yard</li>
<li>Cotton fabric in a solid light color 1/2 yard</li>
<li>Freezer paper</li>
<li>Thread</li>
<li>Cotton Batting</li>
</ul>
<div>
* see #4 below for ingredients to set ink.</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: large;">1</span><br>
Download <a href="http://graphicsfairy.blogspot.com/2012/01/vintage-clip-art-antique-china-plate-4.html" target="_blank">these vintage plate and silverware graphics</a> at the Graphic Fairy. In MS Word paste the images into the place setting as seen above on 8 1/2 " x 11" document. <br>
<br>
<span style="font-size: large;">2</span><br>
To print the design onto the fabric, cut a piece of fabric and a piece of freezer paper, to standard paper size 8 1/2" X 11". Then iron fabric and freezer paper together (wax side to fabric).<br>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">3</span><br>
Once the fabric and the freezer paper are fused, put them in my printer's paper tray and printed my table setting document onto the fabric side.<br>
<br></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: large;">4</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Now, because theses placemats will get plenty of washings, we'll need to set the ink. Allow the ink to dry completely (about 24 hours). Then dry iron fabric on both sides. Next, wash fabric in a bowl with the following recipe:</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>1 tsp salt</li>
<li>1 tsp alum</li>
<li>1 tbsp washing soda</li>
<li>4 cups of cold water</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Allow fabric to soak for about 15 minutes. Then gently wring out the water and placed fabric into the dryer to further heat set the ink.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: large;">5</span><br>
For the border and back of the placemat, cut (2) 2 1/2 " X 15 1/2" rectangles, (2) 9" X 2 1/2" rectangles, and a 151/2 x 13 " rectangle. Cut a 15 1/2 x 13" piece of cotton batting.<br>
<br>
<span style="font-size: large;">6</span><br>
Attach your two 9 1/2 " rectangles to the sides of your solid fabric using a 1/4" seam. (1/4 inch should extend above the top and bottom. Next, sew your two 2/12" x 15 1/2" rectangles to the top and bottom of your solid placemat using 1/4" seams. Sewing all the way, attaching side border.<br>
<br>
<span style="font-size: large;">7</span><br>
Lay fabrics right sides together with cotton batting on top. Sew around three of the border, (top, bottom, and one side) 1/4 " seam. To have nice pointed corners on your place mat, you'll want to trim off excess material from the corners. This is the corner material <i>outside</i> the seam. You'll be cutting out small triangles from the corner. Press all seams open and flat.<br>
<br>
<span style="font-size: large;">8</span><br>
Turn placemat right side out. With a pencil push inside corners out to a point. Tuck in open side seam 1/4" and pin. Sew a seam over the top of the placemat close to the edge. Then sew another seam around the inner fabric's border to secure batting.</div>
<br>

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
A sweet bedtime story of yoga poses inspired by the classic poem <u>Wyken, Blynken, and Nod by Eugene Field</u><i>. </i>It's a great way to wind down for sweet slumber.</div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RUn4QB8ayAk/VW29xU1hx8I/AAAAAAAAXoc/rIqeH3DIhWg/s1600/Storytimepose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RUn4QB8ayAk/VW29xU1hx8I/AAAAAAAAXoc/rIqeH3DIhWg/s640/Storytimepose.jpg" width="528" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Start by sitting on the floor with your child. Tell your child that tonight you are going to tell them a special story and will need their help to tell it. As you read the story below perform the poses. Your child should follow along. Remember to speak in a calming voice.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">2</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wV-A-adKsgM/VW2-8iyvxSI/AAAAAAAAXoo/clmSfAgy1jE/s1600/fly%2Bme%2Bto%2Bthe%2Bmoon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wV-A-adKsgM/VW2-8iyvxSI/AAAAAAAAXoo/clmSfAgy1jE/s640/fly%2Bme%2Bto%2Bthe%2Bmoon.jpg" width="496" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<div style="margin: 0px;">
Take deep inhale breath followed by an exhale while making a tshhhh sound of the ocean waves. Count to four when you inhale, hold for one, then count to 4 on exhale. If your child's doesn't imitate you, then say, "We need an ocean to sail in, can you help me make the sounds?" </div>
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">Wynken, Blyken, and Nod one night, sailed off in a wooden shoe.</span></i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Sailed on a river of crystal light,<br />
Into a sea of dew. </div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

"Where are you going and what do you wish?" </div>

The old moon asked the three. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
"We've come to fish for herring fish </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
That live in the sea; </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Nets of silver and gold have we!" </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Said the fishermen three.</div>

<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The old moon laughed and sang a song,<br />
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,<br />
And the wind that sped them all night long<br />
Ruffled the waves of dew.<br />
The little stars were the herring fish<br />
That lived in that beautiful sea -<br />
"Now cast your nets wherever you wish -<br />
Never afraid are we";<br />
So cried the stars to the fishermen three:<br />
Wyken, Blynken and Nod.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"></span></b><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
All night long their nets they threw </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
To stars of twinkling foam -</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Bringing the fishermen home;</div>
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zdxERvuK78s/Tx0PQtia2oI/AAAAAAAAHlg/uI12WTG8gDs/s1600/IMG_1394.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a>
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">6</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8HTqnJGJidw/VW3AmSDcUuI/AAAAAAAAXpE/LO1bfr0I3qg/s1600/dreamcloudpose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8HTqnJGJidw/VW3AmSDcUuI/AAAAAAAAXpE/LO1bfr0I3qg/s640/dreamcloudpose.jpg" width="468" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
T'was all so pretty a sail<br />
It seemed<br />
As if it could not be,<br />
And some folks thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed<br />
Of sailing that beautiful sea -<br />
But I shall name you the fishermen three:<br />
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">7</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PNPGe0fPc_c/VW3A4qZs2WI/AAAAAAAAXpM/bYNBCRLR0dQ/s1600/thebedtimepose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PNPGe0fPc_c/VW3A4qZs2WI/AAAAAAAAXpM/bYNBCRLR0dQ/s640/thebedtimepose.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
Now climb into your wooden shoe (have your child climb into bed)<br />
And I will tell a secret to you.<br />
Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes (gently touch each eyelid.)<br />
And Nod is a little head (trace a circle around your child's face)<br />
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies is a wee-one's trundle-bed.<br />
So shut your eyes while mommy/daddy sings<br />
Of wonderful sights that be,<br />
And you will see the beautiful things<br />
As you rock in the misty sea.<br />
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:<br />
(whisper) Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.<br />
<br />
<br />
Natalie Merchant sings a wonderful lullaby song to the Robert Louis Stevenson poem <i>In the Land of Nod</i>, that is a perfect companion to play or sing to your little one as they drift to sleep.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">ENJOY!</span></div>
<br />
